BBVA Spain Partners with Ripple to Expand Crypto Trading via Digital Asset Custody Technology

Publisher:Sajad Hayati

Ripple, a leading provider of digital asset infrastructure for financial institutions, has announced an expansion of its long-standing collaboration with BBVA, one of Spain’s most prominent banks. The partnership will see BBVA leveraging Ripple’s institutional-grade digital asset custody technology to enhance its cryptocurrency trading services.

Ripple Custody to Power BBVA’s Crypto Services

In July 2025, BBVA launched a nationwide cryptocurrency trading and custody service for Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), available to all retail customers of legal age in Spain. Ripple’s secure, regulated, and scalable custody infrastructure will now underpin these services, enabling BBVA to store, swap, and transfer digital assets with enterprise-level security.

Under the agreement, BBVA will utilize Ripple’s non-custodial infrastructure to offer rapid and safe custody for tokenized assets, including cryptocurrencies and other digital instruments. This move aims to strengthen BBVA’s digital asset ecosystem and meet growing customer demand for secure crypto asset services.

Expanding a Global Partnership

This collaboration builds on Ripple’s existing relationships with BBVA Switzerland and BBVA Turkey, where Ripple’s custody technology has been in use since October 2024. The partnership reflects the increasing importance of custody solutions, with forecasts suggesting that by 2030, tokenized assets could represent 10% of global GDP and $16 trillion in assets under custody.

Regulatory Tailwinds in the EU

The introduction of the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework across the EU is encouraging banks to roll out crypto asset products in response to client demand. BBVA’s adoption of Ripple’s custody technology aligns with this regulatory momentum, ensuring compliance while expanding its crypto offerings.

Enterprise-Grade Security

Ripple’s custody platform offers advanced software architecture for digital asset custodians, exchanges, OTC desks, and other financial institutions. It enables secure storage, control, and access to crypto assets while meeting stringent legislative, operational, and security standards.

Fundfa View

BBVA’s integration of Ripple’s custody technology marks a significant step in bridging traditional banking with the digital asset economy. With regulatory clarity in the EU and growing demand for secure crypto services, this partnership positions BBVA as a leader in compliant, institution-grade digital asset solutions.
